八字（子平） · BaZi · Four Pillars

Maps birth year, month, day and hour into the Four Pillars (八字), using the sexagenary (干支) symbols to describe an innate pattern.
Classical source: Yuanhai Ziping (Song lineage of Xu Ziping; compiled Ming), Sanming Tonghui (Ming, Wan Minying), Ditian Sui, Ziping Zhenquan (Qing, Shen Xiaozhan).
Calculation vs interpretation: The four pillars are derived deterministically from the ganzhi calendar (solar-term month boundaries, true solar time). Chart construction is a verifiable calendrical calculation; the reading of structure, favourable elements and luck cycles is centuries-refined traditional guidance.

紫微斗數 · Zi Wei Dou Shu

Places stars led by the Purple Star (Zi Wei) across twelve palaces by birth time, using star combinations to describe life domains.
Classical source: Zi Wei Dou Shu Quan Shu — traditionally credited to Chen Tuan / Chen Xiyi (872–989, Five Dynasties–early Song); standard edition compiled by Pan Xiyin (Ming). Exact dating is scholarly-debated; we present this honestly.
Calculation vs interpretation: Star placement follows fixed, reproducible rules from the birth date-time; chart construction is rule-based and repeatable, while the meaning read from combinations is traditional guidance.

五行 · Five Elements · Wu Xing

Describes balance and tendencies through five properties (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) and their generating/overcoming cycles — the substrate of BaZi/Zi Wei.
Classical source: Book of Documents · Hong Fan (pre-Qin, earliest listing); systematised by Zou Yan (Warring States); generating/overcoming cycles formalised in Dong Zhongshu's Chunqiu Fanlu (Western Han).
Calculation vs interpretation: Wu Xing is the analytical language of BaZi/Zi Wei — element strength is computed from the ganzhi pillars. The mapping is a fixed rule; interpreting balance is traditional guidance, not scientific causation.

Twelve animals mapped to the twelve Earthly Branches, marking birth year (boundary at 立春/solar term).
Classical source: Stems-and-branches date to the Shang (attested in oracle bones); the full twelve-animal list first appears in Wang Chong's Lunheng (Eastern Han), with earlier Warring-States bamboo-slip evidence.
Calculation vs interpretation: The animal follows directly and deterministically from the birth-year branch (year boundary at 立春, not Jan 1); its meaning is cultural symbolism and traditional character description.
