Classical source: Yuanhai Ziping (Song lineage of Xu Ziping; compiled Ming), Sanming Tonghui (Ming, Wan Minying), Ditian Sui, Ziping Zhenquan (Qing, Shen Xiaozhan).
Calculation vs interpretation: The four pillars are derived deterministically from the ganzhi calendar (solar-term month boundaries, true solar time).
